The Eagles was formed in 1971 when Glenn Frey, Bernie Leadon, Randy Meisner teamed up with drummer Don Henley. The band signed up with Asylum Records and in 1972 released their first album, Eagles. The album yielded three singles which made it to the Top 40 charts and these were Take It Easy, the bluesy Witchy Woman and the soft country rock ballad, Peaceful Easy Feeling.
The Eagles eventually turned out to be a significant force in popularizing the southern California country rock sound which swept America in the 1970s. Their second album Desperado was based on the theme of Old West outlaws and introduced their penchant for conceptual songwriting. Among the most popular singles from the album were Tequila Sunrise, Outlaw Man, Desperado, Doolin Dalton and Bittercreek. Most of the songs in the album were co-written by Frey and Henley and this established a trend which would be followed in the years to come.
The next album of the Eagles was On The Border which revealed their tendency to move away from the country music style to hard rock. Around this time a fifth member was added to the band, guitarist Don Felder. The next album One of These Nights gave one of the bands Grammy winning singles, Lyin Eyes and the title track itself topped the Billboard chart. By this time however, tensions had started driving the members away from one another; in December 1975 Leadon left the band and was replaced by Joe Walsh.
In the meantime the Eagles released Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 which went on to become the best selling album in U.S history. Their next album was Hotel California which included some of their greatest singles like the title track, New Kid in Town, Life in the Fast Lane and The Last Resort. During the last leg of the ensuing tour, Meisner left the band and was replaced by Timothy B.Schimt.
Next the Eagles came up with the album, The Long Run which included the hit single, Heartache Tonight. Soon afterwards the band broke up and each member tried his luck at a solo music career of which Don Henley appeared to fare the best. Fourteen years after the break-up the band was re-united in 1994 for the album Hell Freezes Over which was a mix of live and new studio tracks. The members of Eagles have toured intermittently since then and in 1998 the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2007, Eagles released Long Road Out of Eden which is supposed to be their final album as Don Henley said about it, This is the final statement.
