Burl Cambium Product Found In Trees


A Burl is a product of the cambium that is found in the trunks of trees. It is found also in the branches of the trees. It is actually a rounded outgrowth and is generally filled with small knots from dormant buds. It superficially resembles to some extant with the Birdseye maple, though it is a completely different thing. The wood that is figured by this outgrowth is generally highly figured. These woods obtained from this outgrowth are generally used as the veneers of furniture, and sometimes as picture frames of very high quality, household objects, the interior paneling of automobile as well as trim and also in woodturning.

There are some species of trees, in which Burl is really very famous. This cambium of some particular species is generally used for particular purpose. There are some species of trees, in which, these outgrowth is really very large. The largest variety of this kind of outgrowth is generally found in redwoods, the species with scientific name Sequoia Sempervirens. These large outgrowths in redwood trees are also capable of giving birth to new redwood trees when moisture is present. The largest as well as the second largest variety of this cambium outgrowth is generally found in a place called Port McNeill of British Columbia.

One of the largest varieties of Burl that is known to the human being was found around the years of 1984 in a small town of Tamworth, situated in Australia. This particular cambium outgrowth stands 6.4 feet tall and it has an odd growth that resembles a trombone. These cambium outgrowths can have amazing size as well as shape. There is a premature variety in Ontario, Canada that has the shape of a bowl. Near Solduc Falls in Olympic National Park, there is another variety of this cambium outgrowth that is really a giant in its size. In the University of Alberta, there is a variety of this cambium outgrowth that is kept on display having an unusual shape of a spruce.

The Burl woods, that are of vary high quality and are generally used by the artists or the furniture makers, generally comes out as a result of a stress undergone by the tree from which the burl is collected. This stress can be of environmental or can also be introduced by men. However, this particular cambium out growth grows beneath the ground in most of the times when these remain attached to the roots. These outgrowths grow on as a type of malignancy and are generally not discovered until the tree is either dead or fallen over.
