Bring It On s storyline goes something like that :The Toro cheerleading squad from Rancho Carne High School in San Diego is confident to win the national championship trophy for the six year on the trot. But, problem creeps up when the new team captain Torrance(Kirsten Dunst) finds the Toros finely-choreographed routines are stolen from the Clovers, a squad from East Compton.
The foul act in the film Bring It On is done by the Toros ex-captain. While the Toros gets a brand new start sweating their guts out, the Clovres, led by Isis(Gabrielle Union), have the problem of amassing money enough to make up their travel expenses to the competition. Isis is determined to bring her team the deserved victory ,while Torrance is doggedly bent on safeguarding the Toros reputation.
But only one could be the winner and to attain that victory one has to perform best. The simple yet smartly written script leads the movie half the way to its success. The rest is done by the glamorous cast , colorful cinematography and obviously the fun quotient. The director Peyton Reed, while talking to Pam Grady, has discussed some of his ideas of filming Bring It On. Initially, when he got the script , it was named Cheer Fever. Reed was aware of the stereotypes of a teen movie. He wanted to create something different within the domain of a teen movie. Firstly, instead of spoofing the whole concept of spoofing, he wanted to underscore the athleticism of this sport.
Then there is the social issue of togetherness of people coping up the racial bias, that is shown in the film. Bring It On Reed said that he loved the idea of using cheerleading as the backdrop, a platform where the white and other minorities would come and share space. But, he also had to priorize the comic elements. And the end product is according to Pam Grady is a blend of humor, romance, and a sprinking of social commentary into a comedy with both heart and smarts. But the director is modest enough to share the credit with the awesome performance of his cast that includes Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Bradford, Gabrielle Union, Eliza Dushku, and other non-professional actors but professional sport persons.
