The company started its journey in the year 1932 when Lorenzo J.Smith at first started the grocery store at Brigham City in Utah. Brigham City is a Box Elder County. The place is the very well known for the co-operative movement that started for creating mercantile co-operative store.

After the first grocery store was opened by Lorenzo J.Smith, his son Dee Smith shortly joined the business and started expanding the company. Soon Smiths Food and Drug Centers started growing and gathered its popularity as a food and drug retail store. The companys growth gathered pace with a number of partnerships and acquisitions. Dee Smith tried to put in his best efforts to build up the company, till he died in the year 1985.

After Dees death in the year 1985, his son Jeff Smith went on to become the CEO and Chairman of the company. In the year 1989, the company completed the public offering with the company shares and after sometimes Smith Food and Drug Centers carried out its trading at the New York Stock Exchange. The company was identified with the company ticker name, SFD.

Smith Food and Drug Centers gradually expanded its business market to the regions in Southern California. Initially the market transactions were done completely in vain and the company gathered almost $500 millions in debt. In the year 1997, the company was acquired by Fred Meyer of Portland in Oregon.

In 1999, Fred Meyer was acquired by the Kroger Company. Fred Meyer is located at Portland in Oregon. Smiths Food and Drug Centers has a number of outlets are spread at Arizona that were rebranded with Frys Food and Drug supplies.

Smiths Food and Drug Centers has a number of outlets that are spread at different locations in Kingman, Lake Havasu City and the Bullhead City. These names however did not change and the retail outlets are still a part of the Smiths Las Vegas Division. Smiths food and drug has a division which is located at the Kroger Company.
