Rexall Drug Store


Rexall is a previous chain of North American drugstores and the same name was used for the name of their store-branded products. At present the name is used for the over-the-counter drugs and drugstores in Canada and several health-supplement products in the United States. The company was established in 1902 by Louis K. Liggett

Louis K. Liggett tried to make a chain of drug stores by combining forty autonomous drug stores to put in some money around $4,000 in a retailers' cooperative named as United Drug Stores. This cooperative started to sell the products under the name of Rexall. The cooperative set up an authorized brunch after World War I and that was separately owned retail outlets. This outlet assumed the trade name of the company.

The autonomous outlet started selling the products of Rexall products. The company was based in an area in Boston, Massachusetts, and the place is at present the ground of Northeastern University. The drug store had an incredible growth in the past.

The companys Drug Store was the heir to the drugstore chain of Walgreen drugstore at Hills, Minnesota. They took the charge of United Drug Company in 1943 which was based on Boston. Under three brands Liggett, Owl, Sonta, and Rexall the drug chain operation was activated and they all were rebranded under the last name.

The nationwide fame of the company came through the sponsorship of two classic American radio programs which were very famous. These two shows were Amos and Andy, and The Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show of the 1940s and 1950's. In both the show an advertisement was shown which depicted the slogan Good health to all from Rexall.

These advertisements also used to start with an announcer showing your Rexall family druggist. the Renfro chain in Texas was acquired by the United-Rexall Drug Inc in 1946. The Owl Superstores chain was introduced by the same company. This Drug Company has the largest possession of drug store franchise in 1958.

As of 2006 Rexall (Day Owl) Drug Store at San Francisco's Union Square, closed by the late fifties. The business model of unitary franchised stores of the same company had all the stores owned separately. They was run by the by the local pharmacist, who were threatened under attack by the discount chains.

These discount chains were such as Thrift Drug and Eckerds. These well business corporate organizations were capable to bring down costs through several actions. Such as the block purchasing and they were concentrated on growth. The value of the Rexall business by 1977 had got worse to that extent so that it was purchased by private investors for approximately $16 million. Wikipedia
