McCall Resort City


McCall is a city situated in Valley County, Idaho, United States. The founder of this resort city was Tom McCall. The city is situated near the center of the Payette National Forest and on the southern shore of Payette Lake. It is one hundred miles north of Boise and can be accessed via the Payette River Scenic Byway. The population of the city, as estimated by the 2005 census was 2,415

Traditionally, the city was a logging community but now McCall is an all season destination for tourists mainly for outdoor recreation. The town is famous for its Winter Carnival, and also for the highest average snowfall in the state and extended winters. The city is a home for many past winters Olympic athletes and is also nicknamed Ski Town U.S.A. The geographical position of the city is at 44`5439 N and 116`611 W.
The city of McCall has a long and enriched history. The first inhabitants of the land were the Native Americans. In the early 1800s, the nomadic French Canadian fur trapper roamed around this area. Miners temporarily named the settlement Lake City which was around the 1860s but could discover only alluvial gold so they moved north.
Louisa and Thomas McCall finally established the settlement during the time period 1889-1891. The couple assumed rights to 160 acres of land and along with Sam Dever who held the squatter rights traded a team of horses. They even established a hotel, school, post office and a saloon. They purchased a sawmill from the Warren Dredging Company, which was the driving economic force until its closure in 1977.
According to 2000 census, there were only 2,084 people, 549 families and 902 households in McCall. The racial makeup of the city consists 96.83% Whites, 0.05% African Americans, 0.14% Asians, 0.48% Native Americans, 1.34% from other races and 1.15% from two or more races. For a household in the city the median income was $36,250 and that for a family was $46,420. The per capita income of the city was $18,479 and 12.2% 0f the population was below the poverty line.

McCall has a council-manager form of a governmental structure. It has a city manager that is nominated by the Mayor and is elected by the city council. The City Council is made up of 4 council members and a mayor who is elected in an at-large election. The city is located in Idahos 1st congressional district. It is located in district 8 of the Idaho legislature at the state level.

The city has Star News as their weekly newspaper, which is published every Thursday. Discover McCall republishes several news articles by the Star News every week. There are two radio stations KMCL and KDZY based in the city. McCall magazine and McCall Home which are semi-annual publications carry on periodical covering of the city. The only local television station in the city is Channel 13. McCall, Idaho
