One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest Winner of Five Academy Awards

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is one of the most popular films from Hollywood that was released in 1975. The movie was directed by Miloš Forman and is an adaptation of the novel.

One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest was one of the first films to have won five major Academy Awards (Best Picture, Actor in Lead Role, Actress in Lead Role, Director, and Screenplay). Other two movies are It Happened One Night in 1934, and The Silence of the Lambs in 1991. The movie was filmed at Oregon State Hospital in Salem, Oregon.

The plot of One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest talks about a man named McMurphy. He is a convict in cases of physical assault. This time he has been charged with raping his girlfriend. He indulged in such a heinous crime because his girlfriend had lied about being eighteen, and was just fifteen years in age. Rather than spend his time in jail, McMurphy somehow convinces the law keepers about his unstable mental status. Due to this he is shifted to a mental hospital and somehow manages to adjust in that atmosphere very nicely. But Nurse Ratched becomes his personal cross to bear as his resistance to the hospital routine gets on her nerves.

One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest was made with the investment of $4.4 million dollars. The director of the film admitted that the asylum was a metaphor for the Soviet Union and this was portrayed by the strict principles set forth by the nurse out there. The protagonist protests against heavy-handed rules that prevent him from watching the World Series. He therefore indulges the inmates from fishing trip and drinking parties in the ward. This lead to his own paralyzing lobotomy.

In the movie One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, Jack Nicholson's portrayal of McMurphy, who lives life free or dies (through an act of mercy killing), turned out to be the main USP of the film. He had earlier delivered performances in Easy Rider (1969) and Five Easy Pieces (1970). The mid-70s was the right time for its release as the whole world was undergoing a process of revival with protest against the oppressive bureaucracy and an insistence upon rights, self-expression, and freedom.Wikipedia
