General American Standard American English

General American is also known as the Standard Midwestern, the Standard Spoken American English or the English that is meant for American Broadcast. The language is spoken with an English accent that is mainly spoken by the Americans. The language is usually felt to be the most neutral in its spoken form and it comes completely free from the regional characteristics.

The General American accent does not follow any fixed standard of grammatical rules or any fixed standard of speaking and receiving any fixed pronunciation form. The received pronunciation of the spoken form of the language is standard with its tonal variation that is being practiced in England.

But the people who are chiefly associated with speaking the language are the General American people. With the standard American English the language stands in complete contrast with the language that is spoken at the provinces of the Southern American region.

Other spoken form of the General American people are the different dialects that are spoken over the regions of Northeastern America and other distinct regional accents that are spoken in the different social groups. But the common people in America usually prefer speaking in languages like the African American Vernacular English dialects.

General American as it is very popular, however was not the spoken dialect of the entire American nation. It was mostly naturally related to the generalized Midwestern region that was put in practice by the common people. This nasal accent was typecast to the newscasters in parts, as the national broadcasters preferred to choose and appoint people who used to speak with similar speech habits.

The most famous personality who is oft referred with speaking in the General American accent is news anchor, Walter Cronkite. Cronkite was born in Missouri and spent his early childhood days out there. It was wholly because of him that the people started assuming that the natives of Missouri had a nasal accent in speaking.

The General American English is usually followed while imparting lessons in accent reduction that introduces different speech patterns to the learners. Other than Cronkite, well-known television journalist Linda Ellerbee also used to speak in the tonal accent. But hers was different from that of Cronkites as she used to speak in such an accent that was typical of the Texas natives.

The regional home of the General American language is traces back to the eastern provinces of Nebraska that covered regions like Omaha and Lincoln. Some of the other parts in America in which the language was generally spoken were the Southern and Central regions in Iowa that comprised of the provinces of Des Morines and the Western Illinois. The language was also spoken at places like Peoria and Quad Cities. Wikipedia
