Notti De Cabiria, Le or Nights of Cabiria is a Italian film. The film was released in the year 1957. It was directed by Federico Fellini. The plot of the film was written by Federico Fellini, Ennio Flaiano, Tulli Pinelli and Pier Paolo Pasolini. The film is based on a novel written by Maria Molinari. The films star cast includes Fellinis wife Giulietta Masina, who plays the main lead of the film along with Francois Perier, Franca Marzi, Dorian Gray, Aldo Silvani, Amadeo Nazzari and many others.

Notti Di Cbiria, Le revolves around life of a prostitute Cabiria. She is a wide-eyed street walker, who lives in a poor part of the city of Rome. She owns a little house and a Bank account. The film follows Cabiria in her search for love but she always encounters heartbreak. She is mistreated and nearly used by everybody she comes across. Her boyfriend steals 40,000 lires from her and also tries to drown her. There is a movie star, who takes her home with him but later dumps her, when his girlfriend appears unexpectedly.
As Notti Di Cabiria, Le progresses, Cabiria is later moved by the effort of a solitary man to help the needy and poor. She joins a pilgrimage to a holy shrine. This divine experience provides her with a hope that she can change for better, unlike her other prostitute friends. After some time she is invited on stage by a hypnotist. She is put in trance and forced to reveal private details about her life. Oscar, an accountant in the audience is moved by her tragic life story. He introduces himself to Cabiria after the show. Oscar consoles her and promises her about a bright and respectable future ahead. Cabiria is suspicious initially, but later falls in head over heels love with him. She convinces herself that she has found a man, who will help her get rid off her stealthy prostitution life and solitude. But her bad fate follows her and she experiences a series of humiliation and torture.
Notti De Cabiria, Le is considered to be one of the best works of director Fellini, although being overshadowed by his later cinematic experiences. The film is a poignant examination of the human spirits ability to fall and rise again. It is an intensely moving film, which portrays the futility of blind faith in religion and people. The film provides a spiritual experience and shows the strength of the human spirit, which endures and overcomes any devastating personal crisis.
The name of the leading character Cabiria, is borrowed from the 1914, Italian film Cabiria. The character of Cabiria is also taken from a small scene in an earlier film of Fellini called, The White Sheik. Notti di Cabiria, Le won Oscar in 1957, for the Best Foreign Film and Giulietta Masina won the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival in the same year. The film was later remade as a glitzy stage musical and film Sweet Charity. Wikipedia
