The film was produced by Enrico Dickmann and Albin grau. The film is a spine-chilling and scary tale of bloodhound vampires. The vampires role was played by Max Schreck. The other actors in the film were; Greta Schroeder, Alexander Granach and Gustav von Wangenheim.

The director Murnau, along with cinematographer Fritz Arno Wagner was able to create an eerie atmosphere with the barest of tools. The simple yet effective techniques were used to create the feeling of uneasiness. Murnau manipulates light and shadow with the thought that terror shall remain unseen. He formed the basics of the modern horrors like object shifting without human interaction or negative exposure turn day into night.

Marnau was unable to procure the rights of the story, so he decided to make his own version with only small changes to the original story. The result was that his movie was very similar to the original story. He was sued by Stokers estate for copyright infringement. Murnau lost the case and was ordered to destroy all the existing prints of Nosferatu. The producers declared themselves bankrupt and refused to pay any compensation to Stokers widow. The film was the first and last film of the production company Prana-FilmGmbH. Film
