The attack on Pearl Harbor occurred during this time. After naval training, he was assigned for duty in the Panama theater. He earned the rank of lieutenant and commanded a patrol torpedo boat. On August 2, 1943, a Japanese destroyer Amagiri crashed into Kennedy's boat, PT-109, throwing him across the deck.

In spite of being injured, he towed a wounded man to safety on an island. For this he received the Navy and Marine Corps Medal. Other honors include the Purple Heart, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Within two days the Cuban government captured the invaders. Also known as the Bay of Pigs Invasion, it was JFK's first failure. One of his first presidential acts was the creation of the Peace Corps, which would help underdeveloped nations in education, farming, health care and construction. The Cuban Missile Crisis, early events of the Vietnam War, the building of the Berlin Wall, the American Civil Rights Movement and the Space Race took place during his presidency. Kennedy signed the Partial Test Ban Treaty into law in August 1963.
