
ROLM Corporation is a technology company that was set up in the year 1969. The company is quite a popular tech companies based at Silicon Valley in the southern part of the Bay area in San Francisco, North Carolina.
Off the first products that were manufactured by ROLM Corporation, the rugged military specification computers were made with the help Data General Software. With advance in time the company started to focus on the digital voice services.
ROLM Corporation also manufactured some of the earliest examples of digital voice equipments. This also comprised of the Computerized Branch Exchanges (CBXs) and the digital phones. Two of the commonly used telecom systems like the Larger PBX coined ROLM CBX.
ROLM Corporation also manufactured a number of computer models that had an orange body make. Some of the popular computer models were 5000, 6000, 7000 and MCBX 8000 computer models. After sometime computer models having a larger multimode of the VLCBX 9000 series also came out in the market. Latest from the company were the white boxed IBM computers that were designed as a part of the 9751 series.
ROLM Corporation introduced the 9751 series of computers along with a new hardware application. The computer application had the smaller hybrid that was made out of Redwood. It is mostly preferred by the technicians as Deadwood that fared very poorly in the sales market.
CBX was chiefly meant to compete directly with the Telecom products like Nortern Telecoms SL-1, AT&T Definity telephone systems and a number of computerized digital voice systems that were developed by that time. ROLM Corporation also launched into the tech market, products like voicemail systems and Phone mails.
Digital ROLM telephones were launched with the revised 8002 version of MCBX in 1982. The products were unique from other markets that were available in the tech market. The telephone did not have any external switch book button that could hang up the telephone.
ROLM Corporation was set up earlier from the initials of the founders names. The founding father was Gene Richeson, Ken Oshmen and Walter Loewenstern apart from the other member Robert Maxfield.
ROLM corporation at first made the flight computers to be used for the army. Afterwards the company branched out in the telecom industry by planning designs for the CBX. The product was a second digital switch in the market, which quickly sold out to the American Telephone and Telegraph company.
Later in the year 1984, ROLM Corporation went into a partnership with the tech giant IBM at Santa Clara. The company started backing out gradually with Nortel as IBM used to have very rigid corporate governance.
